A common situation that, on that specific day, created an outburst. A mere night walk in Ibirapuera Park gave rise to the seed of an idea, germinated as soon as I arrived home: a character.
I soon remembered one of my biggest inspirations: French cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé. I admire the way he portrays the absurdity (and often the ridiculousness) of the human condition, but in a poetic and compassionate way, including himself in the target group of his criticisms.
In addition to Sempé, comes to mind the works of Romanian Saul Steinberg – I love how he represents desires and thoughts in a metaphysical, simple and accurate way – and the American William Steig, with his graphic explorations of existential questions inspired by the psychoanalysis of Wilhelm Reich and Karen Horney. I then realized that my character had everything to become a vehicle to explore these sensibilities a little more.
So, for about a year, I created a certain emotional partnership with him. The character became a kind of graphic therapy, representing, without any disguise, very personal issues. Now I’ve put together all the drawings from the series in a limited edition book.
